Jay Parmar is a highly accomplished, multi-faceted musician who has spent decades working professionally in the music industry. Based in Brighton, UK, his career spans performing, record producing, custom guitar building, and advanced instruction.

His background reflects several major accomplishments:

1. Solo Artist & Session Guitarist

Jay’s playing style is heavily rooted in 1980s melodic rock and virtuoso shredding, citing massive influences like George Lynch, Steve Vai, and Steve Stevens.

  • Solo Discography: He has released solo instrumental and hard rock music, including his debut album Strange Day(2005) and Circle of Fire (2012), the latter of which was released through Steve Vai’s Digital Nations record label and featured a guest performance by his guitar hero, George Lynch.Hardrock Haven

  • Bands & Touring: Jay has a long resume as a touring and studio session guitarist. He has recorded or toured with notable melodic rock and heavy metal acts, including Eden’s CurseIron KnightsThe Inner Road, and the German-British hard rock band RAINIUM.RAINIUM

2. Studio Producer & Mix Engineer

Operating out of his own studio, Sacred Sound Recording Studio in Brighton, Jay is a full-time producer and mixing/mastering engineer. This studio expertise is exactly why his YouTube content focuses so heavily on “mix-ready” tones; he approaches digital modelers and gear from the perspective of an audio engineer who knows how a guitar actually needs to sit inside a professional recording layout.Jay Parmar

3. Custom Guitar Builder (Spirit Dance Guitars)

Jay is an artisan guitar builder who runs Spirit Dance Guitars. He specializes in creating highly unique, one-of-a-kind custom instruments.Guru – Guitar Lessons

  • His builds are distinctive because he designs and hand-draws intricate artwork directly onto the wood using graphite pencil, paint, and markers.

  • His designs are heavily inspired by native cultures, spiritual themes, and natural elements, often embedding crystal inlays or feathers directly into prototypes like his “Medicine Crow” and “White Buffalo” guitars.

  • He also does “Spiritualized” builds, where he takes existing iconic guitars (like the Washburn N4) and custom-mods them with his hand-drawn artwork and personalized specifications.

4. High-Level Guitar Coach

Locally known as the “Brighton Guitar Guru,” Jay has been teaching since 2006. Rather than teaching absolute beginners the basics, he specifically targets his private coaching toward upper-intermediate and advanced players who are stuck on technical plateaus. His curriculum focuses on advanced mechanics (like speed, fluid vibrato, and pitch-perfect bending) combined with the practical art of songwriting and improvisation.

5. Youtube Channel Jay Guitar

Jay Guitar (run by guitarist Jay Parmar) is a popular YouTube channel dedicated to hard rock, heavy metal, and high-tech guitar gear. With just over 30,000 subscribers and more than 500 videos, it caters to guitar enthusiasts who love deep-diving into tone-shaping, digital modelers, and classic rock guitar techniques

Olaf Thorsen

Olaf Thorsen

Olaf Thörsen (stage name of Carlo Andrea Magnani) is an Italian guitarist, songwriter, producer, and one of the most influential figures in European progressive power metal. He is best known as the founding guitarist and principal songwriter of Vision Divine, and as a long-time member of Labÿrinth.

Early career

Born on September 27, 1971, in Viareggio, Tuscany, Italy, Thörsen didn’t begin playing guitar until he was nearly 20 years old, which is relatively late compared to many professional guitarists. Despite this, he progressed rapidly, studying music after initially pursuing modern languages at university. He co-founded Labÿrinth in the early 1990s and helped establish the band as one of Italy’s leading melodic power metal acts.

Vision Divine

In 1998–1999, Thörsen created Vision Divine, initially as a solo project. The band soon evolved into a full group and became known for blending:

  • Progressive metal
  • Power metal
  • Symphonic elements
  • Concept albums
  • Sophisticated songwriting

Vision Divine has featured acclaimed vocalists including Fabio Lione (also known for Rhapsody of Fire) and Michele Luppi. Albums such as Stream of ConsciousnessThe Perfect MachineDestination Set to Nowhere, and Blood and Angels’ Tears have earned the band a loyal following among progressive metal fans.

Playing style

Unlike many guitar heroes, Olaf Thörsen is often praised more for his compositional ability than for technical showmanship. His playing combines:

  • Fast alternate-picked runs
  • Neo-classical influences
  • Harmonic sophistication
  • Memorable melodic themes
  • Tight rhythm guitar work

His solos are technically demanding but always serve the song rather than existing purely as displays of speed.

Songwriting philosophy

In recent interviews, Thörsen has explained that passion is more important to him than commercial success. He enjoys writing concept albums and drawing inspiration from literature, philosophy, and history. For example, Blood and Angels’ Tears was inspired in part by Dante’s Divine Comedy and explores themes of choice, morality, and conflict.

Gear

Over the years, Olaf has been associated with:

  • Ibanez guitars
  • ENGL amplifiers
  • His own Fantasy Thorsen guitar line from Brazen Guitars

He is known for a clear, articulate high-gain tone that balances precision with warmth.

Why guitarists admire him

Olaf Thörsen is admired because he proves that outstanding metal guitar isn’t only about playing fast. His greatest strength is writing memorable songs that combine progressive structures, powerful riffs, and emotional melodies. Many fans consider him one of the architects of the Italian power/progressive metal sound alongside other notable Italian guitarists such as Luca Turilli, Simone Mularoni, and Andrea Cantarelli.

Mike Gianelli

Mike Gianelli is an American guitarist, composer, and producer best known in the progressive metal and djent scenes for his highly technical playing, particularly on extended-range guitars such as 8- and 9-string instruments. He combines heavy, low-tuned riffs with melodic lead work, tapping techniques, and ambient textures.

Some highlights of his career include:

  • Solo artist: He released the EP Gravity (2015), followed by Adapt (2016) and the full-length album Chapter One(2018). Since then, he has continued releasing singles including VOID (2024), Variant (2025), Vanishing (2025), Maya (2026), and Fragments (2026).
  • Bands: Gianelli has been associated with the technical metal bands Dissipate and Bermuda. Around 2014, he toured with Bermuda after the departure of one of their guitarists.
  • Playing style: He’s particularly known for pushing the capabilities of 9-string guitars. His EMG TV performances gained attention for demonstrating fluid tapping, sweeping, and melodic phrasing on an instrument that many players use primarily for heavy rhythm work.

Patrick Sheridan

Patrick (“Pat”) Sheridan is a founding guitarist of Fit For An Autopsy, one of the most respected bands in modern deathcore. Formed in New Jersey in 2008, the band has become known for blending crushing heaviness with progressive songwriting, melodic elements, and socially conscious lyrics. Sheridan has been part of the band since its inception and remains one of its principal riff writers.

Playing style

Sheridan’s playing is built around precision, groove, and atmosphere rather than nonstop technical exhibition. His style combines:

  • Massive, low-tuned seven-string riffs
  • Tight, syncopated rhythms influenced by Meshuggah
  • Melodic death metal harmonies
  • Technical alternate picking
  • Tasteful lead playing rather than extended shred solos
  • Dynamic songwriting that balances brutality with emotional passages

One of the reasons Fit For An Autopsy stands out in deathcore is that their songs don’t rely solely on breakdowns. Sheridan and fellow guitarists Will Putney and Tim Howley create layered arrangements that shift between crushing riffs, ambient clean sections, and memorable melodic hooks.

Tone and gear

Sheridan has been open about his gear over the years. Early in his career he primarily played Ibanez seven-string guitars before switching to Mayones custom instruments, a move he described as transformative for his playing. His tone emphasizes clarity under high gain so that complex chords and fast riffing remain articulate even with extremely low tunings.
