Kiko Loureiro

enpicks

Kiko Loureiro is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished rock and metal guitarists of his generation. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1972, he first gained international recognition as the lead guitarist for the Brazilian power metal band Angra, then later became the lead guitarist for Megadeth from 2015 to 2023.

What makes Kiko stand out is his rare combination of technical virtuosity and musical depth. His playing blends:

  • Lightning-fast alternate picking and sweep picking
  • Fluid legato and two-handed tapping
  • Jazz fusion harmony
  • Brazilian rhythms
  • Classical and flamenco influences
  • Strong melodic phrasing rather than pure speed

Unlike many “shred” guitarists, Kiko is known for writing solos that are memorable and expressive while still being incredibly demanding technically.

Career highlights

  • Angra (1991–present): He helped define the band’s signature sound on albums like Angels CryHoly Land, and Temple of Shadows, which are considered classics of progressive power metal.
  • Megadeth (2015–2023): Replacing Chris Broderick was a daunting task, but Kiko quickly became a fan favorite. He played on Dystopia (which won a Grammy for the title track) and The Sick, the Dying… and the Dead!, contributing both technically dazzling and highly musical guitar work.
  • Solo career: His instrumental albums—including No GravityOpen Source, and Theory of Mind—showcase everything from heavy metal to jazz fusion, acoustic music, and Brazilian influences.

As a teacher

Kiko is also one of the best-known online guitar educators. His lessons focus on:

  • Practice methodology
  • Improvisation
  • Music theory
  • Technique development
  • Mental approaches to mastering the instrument

Many guitarists appreciate that he teaches why something works musically, not just how to play it.

His playing is heavily influenced by legendary blues and blues-rock guitarists, including:

  • B.B. King
  • Jimi Hendrix
  • Eric Clapton
  • Stevie Ray Vaughan
  • Joe Bonamassa

Rather than focusing only on blues licks, Tim emphasizes understanding the fretboard, chord tones, phrasing, and improvisation. His teaching covers topics such as:

  • The CAGED system
  • Triads for blues soloing
  • Chord-tone improvisation
  • Hendrix-inspired rhythm guitar
  • Blues phrasing and feel

Tim teaches both in person from his studio in Shrewsbury, England, and online to students around the world. He also produces instructional content through YouTube, Patreon, books, and structured video courses.

He is also endorsed by several guitar-related companies, including Patrick James Eggle Guitars, Chicken Picks, Kool Amplification, and LT Custom Guitars, reflecting his reputation within the blues guitar community.

Kristofer Dahl

nPIks

Kristofer Dahl

Kristofer Dahl (often just called Kris) is a well-known Swedish guitarist, instructor, and prominent online creator in the guitar community. He is heavily recognized for his work as a pioneer of online guitar education and his long-running YouTube channel.

Here are the key things to know about him:

1. Online Guitar Pioneer (Guitar Masterclass)

If you played guitar in the late 2000s or 2010s, you likely ran across his work. Kristofer was one of the foundational instructors and the driving force behind GuitarMasterclass.net (GMC), one of the earliest and most successful subscription-based video lesson websites for guitarists. Through GMC, he helped popularize the “video lesson + backing track + interactive forum tabs” format that revolutionized how bedroom guitarists learned to shred.

2. High-Tech Playing Style

As a player, Kris is a highly technical virtuoso heavily rooted in progressive rock, neoclassical metal, and fusion. His playing style blends incredibly clean high-speed alternate picking, hybrid legato picking, and complex arpeggio substitutions. He frequently draws inspiration from legendary players like Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, Eric Johnson, and Santana.

3. YouTube & “Learn with Kris” Courses

Kristofer runs a highly popular self-titled YouTube channel with nearly 300,000 subscribers and thousands of videos.

  • The Philosophy: His channel’s tagline is based around his love for “learning and teaching.” He often focuses on breaking down the psychology of practice, how to avoid repeating his past technical mistakes, and how to stay motivated.

  • Independent Courses: He offers his own streamlined curriculum through his website (kristoferdahl.com). These include structured step-by-step masterclasses like From Zero to HeroSmart PracticeHybrid Legato, and Riff Class.

4. Viral Inside Jokes & Originals

Among long-time guitar community members, Kris is also remembered for his quirky, fun original music and viral videos from the early days of internet guitar culture. One of his most legendary pieces is an original progressive/comedy track called “MITTWOCH” (Wednesday). Written entirely with funny, broken German lyrics about forgetting what day of the week it is, the video features him singing casually before launching into an absolutely blistering, face-melting guitar solo.

The Takeaway Kristofer Dahl isn’t just a phenomenal shredder; he is widely respected because of his approachable, humble teaching style. He strips away the ego often found in high-level guitar playing and focuses on making advanced mechanics accessible to the everyday player.

Darrell Braun

Darrell Braun

Darrell Braun is a Canadian guitarist, educator, and YouTube creator who has become one of the largest guitar-focused personalities on YouTube. His channel, Darrell Braun Guitar, has grown to around 860,000 subscribers, where he publishes videos on guitars, amps, pedals, and playing techniques.

His content typically includes:

  • Reviews and demos of electric, acoustic, and classical guitars
  • Comparisons between instruments at different price points
  • Amplifier and effects pedal demonstrations
  • Guitar modifications and partscaster builds
  • Playing challenges and technique videos
  • Tips for buying affordable gear

One of the reasons his channel became popular is that he plays each instrument extensively instead of just talking about specifications, giving viewers a sense of how the gear actually sounds in a musical context. He’s also known for presenting budget-friendly options alongside premium instruments.

Darrell has collaborated with or featured products from many major manufacturers, including Sire, PRS, Harley Benton, Yamaha, Fender, and others. He has also produced long-running series exploring the Larry Carlton Signature guitars from Sire.

Jens Larsen

Jens Larsen

Jens Larsen is a Danish jazz guitarist, composer, educator, and one of the most influential online jazz guitar teachers. While he was born in Denmark (1973), he has spent much of his professional career in the Netherlands, where he teaches at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and performs with several jazz groups.

Background

Larsen didn’t initially pursue music professionally. He first earned a degree in mathematics and computer science from the University of Aarhus in 1995. After discovering a passion for jazz, he studied at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague from 1998 to 2004, graduating cum laude with a master’s degree in jazz guitar. During his studies he performed with musicians such as Michael Brecker, Jim McNeely, and Slide Hampton.

Playing style

His playing is rooted in:

  • Bebop and hard bop
  • Modern jazz harmony
  • Strong voice leading
  • Melodic improvisation rather than flashy technique

Influences he has mentioned include players such as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Jim Hall, and traditional bebop guitarists, while his teaching emphasizes understanding harmony over memorizing patterns.

YouTube and education

Jens is perhaps best known today for his YouTube channel, which has grown to over 500,000 subscribers. His lessons cover topics like:

  • Jazz chords and chord melody
  • II–V–I progressions
  • Bebop language
  • Improvisation
  • Music theory
  • Practice strategies

His videos are known for being concise, practical, and often challenging common misconceptions about learning jazz. He also publishes books, study guides, and online courses through his website.

Performing career

Although many people know him as an educator, Larsen remains an active performer and composer. He is a founding member of the jazz quartet Træben, whose albums have received critical praise in Europe and North America. He has also worked with ensembles including the Yvonne Smeets Group, Jazz4Kids, and Wijnen, Winter & Larsen.

Reputation

Within the jazz guitar community, Larsen is widely respected for making advanced concepts accessible without oversimplifying them. Reddit discussions frequently recommend his lessons and his “Jazz Guitar Roadmap” course, especially for players transitioning from rock or blues into jazz. Many players appreciate his structured teaching style and depth of harmonic knowledge.

If you’re interested in jazz guitar education, Jens Larsen is often mentioned alongside educators like Rick Beato, Tomo Fujita, and Barry Greene, but with a much stronger focus on traditional and modern jazz improvisation.

Robbie Calvo

Robbie Calvo

Robbie Calvo is a British-born guitarist, singer, songwriter, session musician, and one of the best-known online guitar educators. Originally from London, he later established himself in Nashville, where he has worked as a session guitarist, performer, songwriter, and instructor.

He’s especially respected among guitarists for combining:

  • Blues, rock, country, and fusion influences.
  • Strong melodic phrasing rather than purely technical “shredding.”
  • A deep understanding of harmony, modes, and fretboard visualization.
  • Practical teaching that focuses on making players sound musical rather than just faster.

Teaching career

Calvo is probably even more famous as a teacher than as a performer. He has created more than 20 instructional courses for TrueFire, many of which have been among the platform’s best sellers. His lessons cover topics such as:

  • Pentatonic improvisation
  • Modes and modal harmony
  • Chord melody
  • Rhythm guitar
  • Songwriting
  • Slide guitar
  • Fingerstyle techniques
  • Solo construction and phrasing

Students often praise him for explaining why musical ideas work instead of simply demonstrating licks.

Performance and session work

Beyond teaching, Calvo has:

  • Worked as a Nashville session guitarist.
  • Written songs for country artists.
  • Produced music for television, including projects for the BBC, ITV, PBS, and ABC.
  • Performed hundreds of live solo shows using vocals, guitar, looping, and percussion.

Yamaha and gear

Robbie has been closely associated with Yamaha as a clinician, conducting workshops around the United States and demonstrating instruments such as:

  • Revstar electric guitars
  • A-Series acoustics
  • Silent Guitars

He’s also worked with companies like Line 6, producing demonstrations and educational content around guitar processors and effects.

Playing style

If you’ve watched him play, you’ll notice several trademarks:

  • Smooth legato phrasing.
  • Tasteful use of hybrid picking.
  • Expressive bends and vibrato.
  • Sophisticated chord voicings.
  • Blues vocabulary mixed with modal ideas.
  • Strong melodic development rather than long streams of notes.

Many players compare his melodic sensibility more to players like Robben FordLarry Carlton, or Scott Henderson than to high-speed shred guitarists.

Why he’s respected

Professional musicians often point to Robbie Calvo as someone who bridges the gap between advanced theory and practical musicianship. His lessons tend to emphasize:

  • Hearing chord changes.
  • Connecting scales to harmony.
  • Building solos that tell a story.
  • Developing a personal voice on the instrument rather than copying patterns.

If you’re interested in learning improvisation, melodic soloing, or understanding the fretboard more deeply, his material is widely regarded as some of the most thoughtful and musical available.

Joey Jones

ChickenPicks artist Joey Jones

Joey Jones

Joey Jones (online as @joeyjooones), a Berlin-based German guitarist, songwriter, and content creator who has become well known through his YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok guitar videos.

Here’s an overview of his career:

  • Professional guitarist before social media. Before building an online audience, Joey worked as a touring and session guitarist. He has performed with German artists including Nena and Daniel Biscan, and also produced music for other bands.
  • Rise on YouTube and Instagram. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when live touring stopped, he began posting regular guitar videos online. His energetic riff-based performances, original solos, and tone demonstrations quickly attracted a large audience. By 2026, he had amassed well over 100,000 followers across YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok.
  • Playing style. Joey’s music sits somewhere between alternative rock, hard rock, and modern blues rock. His influences often draw comparisons to players such as John Mayer, Dave Grohl, Josh Homme, and classic Marshall-driven rock. His emphasis is on memorable riffs, expressive bends, and strong melodic phrasing rather than technical shredding.
  • Gear enthusiast. His channel includes a lot of content on guitar tone, pedals, and amplifiers. He has collaborated with brands including Nik Huber Guitars, JHS Pedals, Browne Amplification, and others. His signature sound is closely associated with Nik Huber guitars and vintage-style Marshall amplifiers, especially a 1987 Marshall Silver Jubilee.
  • Original music. After becoming established online, he launched his own original alternative rock project. His debut singles introduced a melodic, riff-heavy sound inspired by 1990s rock, and he has since begun performing his own headline shows in Berlin.

One reason Joey Jones has become popular is that he combines professional-level playing with an approachable teaching style. Many of his videos break down guitar tone, songwriting, or practical playing concepts rather than simply showcasing virtuosity.

If you’re into players like Pete Thorn, Rabea Massaad, John Mayer, or Chris Buck, you’ll probably appreciate Joey Jones’ blend of tasteful playing, gear knowledge, and songwriting.

Tino Hevia

ChickenPicks artist Tino Hevia

Tino Hevia

Tino Hevia (full name Constantino Hevia Toraño) is a Spanish guitarist, songwriter, producer, and recording engineer best known as the founder and rhythm guitarist of the power metal bands Reveal, Darksun, and formerly Nörthwind. Born on 10 August 1976 in Zürich, Switzerland, he has been an influential figure in the Spanish power metal scene for more than two decades.

Musical career

Tino began playing guitar in 1998, inspired by bands such as Rage, Dio, and Blind Guardian. He has said that hearing Blind Guardian’s Imaginations from the Other Side convinced him to dedicate himself to writing songs rather than simply becoming a lead guitarist. His emphasis has always been on strong songwriting, memorable riffs, and melodies.

He founded:

  • Nörthwind (1999), a pioneering Spanish power metal band.
  • Darksun (2002), which became one of Spain’s best-known melodic power metal acts.
  • Reveal (2017), an international project featuring Swedish vocalist Rob Lundgren and guest appearances from musicians associated with bands such as Blind Guardian, Primal Fear, and Rage.

Throughout his career, he has shared stages with major metal acts including Bruce Dickinson, Angra, Rage, Savatage, Motörhead, and WarCry.

Playing style

Unlike many power metal guitarists, Tino describes himself primarily as a rhythm guitarist and composer. His philosophy is that great songs come before technical showmanship. His riffs are tight, melodic, and heavily influenced by classic European power metal while incorporating modern production techniques.

Production work

Besides performing, Tino produces, records, mixes, and masters music from his own studio. For later Reveal releases, he handled much of the production himself, collaborating remotely with musicians across several countries.

Guitar gear

Tino has been an endorser for several major guitar brands. His current setup includes:

  • Charvel Pro-Mod guitars (his main instruments)
  • Gibson Les Paul models
  • ENGL amplifiers
  • Kemper Profiler
  • Suhr pickups
  • Two Notes Torpedo Captor X
  • Shure in-ear monitors

His rig is designed to deliver a powerful, articulate high-gain tone suited to melodic and power metal.

Why metal guitarists appreciate him

Tino Hevia is respected not only for his playing but also for his songwriting. His music combines memorable choruses, harmonized guitars, and polished production, and he has built a reputation for collaborating with internationally recognized musicians while remaining deeply involved in every aspect of creating his records—from composition to final mix. His philosophy, featured on Reveal’s official site, sums up his approach: “If you want something… fight for it!”

Teaching guitar for 20+ years at home & at various institutes, including the Amsterdam Conservatory. I play any style, from rock, funk, indie, soul, R&B, metal, pop, hiphop, dance, u name it.

Guitar work

Will give any guitar part the depth and soul it needs, be it simple or complex, loud or quiet, heavy or sophisticated. I am a team player, reliable, hard worker, can work fast, am stylistically versatile at a professional level. Experienced across the full spectrum of being a recording and performing musician, played all the biggest stages and festivals in the Netherlands. In the past decade I’ve collaborated with various young Dutch artists in pop/hiphop music, as well as doing commissioned and commercial production/composition work, where this flexibility is of great use. You have to be able to create in any style/genre. Be intuitive, communicate about it. From heavy metal, to hiphop, to meditation music. I can handle complexity as well as simplicity. Less is more, and sometimes, more is more as well! 🙂 Also have been the go-to mixing and mastering engineer for various clients in music and podcasts, through the years. Frank Pané

Frank Pané’s story:

I started my musical history as a 7 year old kid with piano playing and had pursued this for about further 7 years.

I came then to the point that I felt a little bit bored of just playing pieces of classic based music combined with strict

rules, and as a rebellious teenager, you are not willing to follow the rules anyway, so that I did as a 14 year old adolescent my first steps on guitar.

After several school bands, in 1995 developed with Mantragora the first serious formation. Afterwards some stations followed until 1998 the formation Red to Grey (R2G) was established.
In 2002, I left R2G and joined the power metal band Valley’s Eve. In the same year I also set up the Deep Purple / Rainbow cover band Burn.
The begin of 2007 finally saw the release of my first instrumental record called “Liquid Emotions” and another album (“Naked’), recorded together with my band, saw the

light of day in 2010.

In 2013, I joined Purpendicular, one of the most successful Deep Purple tribute bands.

2015 was a busy and exciting year to me, I became a member

of the legendary German rock band Bonfire and also released

my second solo instrumental CD “Six String Tales” on Borila records/ H’Art distribution worldwide.

One year later, I decided to found the classic rock influenced band Sainted Sinners and in 2018 another more progressive rock orientated band called Dark Blue Inc.

If time and circumstances permit, I’m happy to perform with yet another project of mine called Lydia & Frank Pané’s Six String Tales the music of my guitar heroes.

LADY EVYL, founded in 2022, is my latest project. It’s the ultimate female (by my wife Lydia) fronted tribute to Black Sabbath.
